![]() They can be used in apps like TextEdit, Safari, Keynote and Pages and as I have just found out the latest version of Photoshop CC 2017. Colour fonts on the MacĮvery native app since 10.7 supports Apple color bitmap fonts. ![]() Seems like people are starting to push the technology forward. I already found that Typekit are offering color fonts. Meaning we all get full support for both Mac and PC regardless of what application you are using. The good news is things are evolving quickly. The hope is this will standardise the use of color fonts. The key players are working on OpenType SVG. Some apps support it, some don't.But wait. Different operating systems are using different color formats, and the same applies to your applications. It's just that Apple and Google went down one road and Microsoft went down another-typical.The result is two different implementations and thus support is not fully widespread. The technology has actually been around for a while. When the hell did that happen? This could be a game changer. Yeah but only a single flat color. How about a color bitmap font with millions of colors with texture or whatever you want.Your reaction should be Holy shit. I quickly realised that the photoshop extension won't just create a regular font, no sir.It will create a full color bitmap font. You will think color font? I can already do that. No more copy, paste, copy paste.I thought this new photoshop extension sounded interesting, I was intrigued-let's take a look-see. It really helps speed up my workflow when creating fonts in illustrator. It makes creating color bitmap fonts in photoshop a breeze.I've been using fontself maker for illustrator for a while now. Funny that as I was asked by the fontself team if I would be interested in trying out their new fontself photoshop extension. Make your plugin more accessible to a wide range of typographers, graphic designers, & co.What do I think of color bitmap fonts? Never even gave it a thought. More and more users are demanding an alternative for Linux or Android… So far, the companies always argue with “too low user numbers in X or Y operating systems”, but neglect the large number of users willing to switch. You only need to look in the forums of various (creative) apps. Just wanted to point out, because just in these times, in which companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, increasingly invade the privacy of people and disregard them, more and more people long (just also noticeable since the corona pandemic) for alternatives. You are not obligated to do anything and it is also your right to have your own roadmap. Who knows if Adobe will go so far as to contractually obligate developers of plugins to develop them exclusively for Adobe (or parts thereof). Many software companies and developers have often made this mistake in the past, and were sherlocked by Apple, for example. This would also make you more independent from software giants. It’s neither a commitment nor a rejection, but here I would also encourage you for economic reasons to think about developing a cross-platform standalone version from your plugin. I know the common answer is “no plans yet, but never say never”. All those extra, super-duper, precision tools for finishing touches are not needed and can be added later as soon as the user base has reached its certain size.Īnd even if the standalone version absolutely needs PS and AI files to work with in the beginning, at least that would be a start as well, since apps like Affinity Designer or Affinity Photo can export their files to. Just good enough to create and export high quality (+color) fonts and styles. There are apps like FontForge, but let’s be honest, hardly anyone uses that and it looks like it belongs back in the 2000s.Ī FontSelf standalone version would be great and it doesn’t have to compete with the big commercial counterparts. There is no real cross-platform alternative. Of course, as long as the company behind the Affinity Apps does not share any kind of API for 3rd Party Plugins developers, there won’t be a Fontself Plugin for Affinity Designer or Affinity Photo.īut a standalone Version of FontSelf would be really great and also a viable alternative to Font making apps like Fontlab or glyphsapp who are either very expensive, bloated with too many functions or or are only available for 1 or maximum 2 platforms. I cancelled the whole Adobe Suite last year and now I’m left with a plugin I can’t use anymore.
